Story about the name of Kyustendil

The founders of today’s town of Kyustendil were Thracians from the Denteleti tribe. In 181 BC the settlements of the Denteli people were ravaged by the troops of Philip V of Macedonia.

It the beginning of the 1st century AD the Roman rulers turned today’s town of Kyustendil into a well fortified town and named it Pautalia (Town of Springs).
